To the Shawnee and other Indian nations, the cool mineral springs in the area of the Ozarks, known today as Eureka Springs, was considered to be sacred land. In the late 1850s, Dr. Alvah Jackson recorded the healing properties of the mineral springs after his son's sore eyes were healed from the water. In 1879, a friend of Dr. Jackson's, Judge J.B. Saunders was cured of a skin disease within a month of using the spring water. The news of the springs healing powers brought hundreds of people to the area. A town was built and at the Independence Day celebration of 1879, it was named Eureka Springs. By 1881, lovely Victorian buildings lined the streets and elegant hotels were built for the many visitors who came by rail to take pleasure in the healing mineral springs. Eureka was soon considered a pristine vacation resort area as it still remains so today.
