Waynesville, North Carolina City Guide

For over 20 years, Pamela Lanier's Waynesville, North Carolina Travel Guide has been your connection to Waynesville's tourism community with invaluable details on local attractions, restaurants, shopping, museums, history, outdoor recreation and more.

Museums

The museums in Waynesville give you a glimpse of daily life in the mountain region of Haywood County years ago. The Red Barn Mountain Museum's artifacts, photographs and exhibits will take you through the history of the region. After learning about life in the mountains you may want to go to the Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts to view the 19th century furniture, pottery, porcelain and the Native American artifacts. The museum is located in the 1875 Shelton House; the property is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Another historical site that you may want to visit is the Francis Grist Mill. The mill was used to grind wheat and corn back in the 1800s. To change the pace a little, the Wheels Through Time Museum will not only excite motorcycle and automobile enthusiasts but anyone who's ever been out on the open road. The museum has a rare collection of vintage vehicles and motorcycles that date back to1903, and most of them still run—but get there soon, as the museum is planning a relocation sometime after 2009.
