Things To See & Do
A trip to Portland would be almost incomplete without a stop at the Saturday Market. Open Saturdays and Sundays March through Christmas Eve, the Portland Saturday Market entices visitors with row after row of homemade foods and local handcrafted items. Located in historic Old Town and bursting with activities for children, music, and theatre, it’s an entertaining outing for everyone! Visitors in town April through December will also want to stop by the Portland Farmers Market. With four venues within the city, shoppers are sure to find a convenient location. Sample delicious treats and savory snacks, buy local, organic produce and homemade jams and sauces, and enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the Portland Farmers Market. For an urban shopping experience set amid historic industrial buildings, head to the Pearl District where retail shops, galleries, lofts, and spas commingle in the hippest place to browse and buy. Wander through the stores, admire the art, indulge in the delicious food, and relax at an outdoor café. The Pearl District is an experience in and of itself.
For an afternoon of fun while frolicking with the animals, visit the Oregon Zoo where guests can set their sights on the Red Ape Reserve, the African Rainforest, Cats of the Amur Region, and Island Pigs of Asia. It’s an around-the-world adventure right in the middle of Portland! For a bird’s-eye-view from the treetops, embark on an adventure at the World Forestry Center Discovery Museum. Hands-on, interactive, family-friendly exhibits will expose visitors to trees of the Pacific Northwest and around the world. Discovery Museum guests will be amused by learning how to plant a tree, log lightly, raft the rapids, and practice smoke jumping. After those thrilling adventures, head upstairs to learn about forests around the world through virtual tours that take passengers on a wild ride through the four types of forest. The exploration will leave visitors feeling amazed and in awe of the trees that surround us.
Portland is a city with an artistic personality, and visitors won’t be disappointed by its expression. Independent music is a vibrant scene in Portland and many intimate venues host popular Indie musicians. In addition to live music in smaller settings, the Portland music scene includes the Portland Jazz Festival, Waterfront Blues Festival, and the Music Fest NW. Those seeking more traditional music will be enchanted by the Portland Opera, Oregon Symphony, and Portland Symphonic Choir. Theatre goers will also want to check out the Portland Center for Performing Arts, the Portland Center Stage Gerding Theater, and the Northwest Children’s Theater and School. |
