Introduction and History
The city of Charleston has touched the hearts of visitors for many years with its hospitality and southern charm. Thousands come to Charleston each year from all over the world to capture the city’s essence and a glimpse of true American History. The city’s pristine colonial architecture, lucid waterfront and majestic flower gardens have influenced photographers and artists since the turn of the century . A casual walk down the cobblestone streets will always be remembered for its unmistakable scent of sweet Wisteria and Magnolia that permeate the air.
Charleston’s history extends back to the late 1600’s when the first English settlers arrived. By 1690 Charleston was the fifth largest city in North America and a bustling seaport. Two of the most historical events in U.S. history transpired in Charleston, the American Revolution and the Civil War. The Old Exchange and Customs House held events for George Washington in 1791 while the signers of the Declaration of Independence frequented the Provost Dungeon. Today the city is the second most productive port in the world and a prime technological and medical research area. |
