Introduction & History
Located in West Marin County, Inverness is a cozy residential area known for delighting visitors with its natural beauty and charm. The small downtown area is home to a general store, post office, library, and a handful of restaurants and shops. During a stay, visitors might wander down to the water’s edge to catch a glimpse of an Inverness Yacht Club race or browse about the Inverness Library, home to the Jack Mason Museum, a proud historian of West Marin. From the beginning of its history, the town of Inverness served as the summer home for many affluent San Franciscans. In 1889 in an attempt to recover some railroading losses, Judge James Shafter subdivided the wooded west shore of Tomales Bay, creating a divine locale for peaceful summer vacations. Many homes in Inverness still remain with the original families, and Inverness is proud to continue celebrating old-time traditions each year, including swimming lessons and sailing races in the summer, foot races on July 4th, and the garden club’s springtime Primrose Tea. Located just outside of the Point Reyes National Seashore’s 72,000 acres of wilderness, beach, and ranchland, Inverness is the perfect place to call home for a day, a week, or even a month.
