Introduction & History

Sevierville is one of those interesting communities that has been able to preserve its historical past while offering modern amenities travelers come to expect. The beauty of the countryside and the grandeur of the Great Smoky Mountains entice visitors from all over the world to start their Rocky Mountain adventure in this historical landmark. So take a few days and stop by to enjoy all the fun and excitement this city has to offer.

Since the early settlers of Sevierville took over this Cherokee region once known as the Forks-of-the-Little Pigeon, this Smoky Mountain city has had a rough time establishing itself. After years of attacks from the Cherokees, the strife between the new settlers and the original inhabitants ended with the Treaty of Dumplin Creek in 1785. But in the years to follow, things did not get any easier for the town settlers. A downtown fire destroyed not only the courthouse and multiple buildings, but also the original records from the founding fathers. It wasn't until after the Civil War that the city really began to blossom and the Sevierville Lumber Company was established. The health benefits derived from the mountain springs sparked the tourist industry in the late 1800s and travel to and from the city became commonplace when the Smoky Mountain Railroad opened up to passengers. Since the Great Smoky Mountains National Park opened in 1934, the tourist industry has accounted for much of the city's economy.
