Indian legend says that the heavens were so taken with the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley that each start cast the brightest jewel from its own crown into the valley’s waters to sparkle and shine forever as a sign of celestial reverence. English settlers first set their sights on the Shenandoah Valley, "Clear Eyed Daughter of the Stars", from atop the Blue Ridge Mountains. In the 1730's, Scotch-Irish and German immigrants from Pennsylvania began settling in the valley and established communities along the Indian path known as the Great Wagon Road. Rockbridge County was part of a royal land grant that was given in portions to settlers to establish as farmland and was named for the "rocky bridge", The Natural Bridge of Virginia, one of the natural wonders of the world.

With the arrival of the railroad between 1860 and 1880 the town really began to grow.
