Historic Lexington Outings
Set out from your bed and breakfast and begin your historic exploration of Lexington with a stop at the Lee Chapel & Museum located at Washington & Lee University. Learn the history of the University and the city's education ties to two of America's greatest generals, George Washington and Robert E. Lee. Wander through Lee's office, a portrait gallery, an exhibition tracing the University's history, and humble museum shop.
Next on your agenda could be a visit to Stonewall Jackson's House, the only home the Confederate general ever owned, restored to its appearance before the Civil War. Jackson lived in the house with his wife while he was teaching at the Virginia Military Institute before the Civil War. Admission to the house includes a guided tour through the house and the opportunity to view exhibits on the ground floor. Wander through the gardens blossoming with perennial and annual flowers as well as vegetables and herbs.
The Virginia Military Institute is the oldest state-supported military college in the nation, and visitors can enjoy full-dress parades most Friday afternoons in the spring and fall and cadet-led tours departing from the VMI Museum twice-daily. Wander through the beautiful campus's historic grounds and visit the Museum where on display you'll see the military uniform Stonewall Jackson was wearing when he was mortally wounded, George Patton's shiny helmet, and an exact replica of a cadet room to give visitors an insider's view of cadet life.
Your historic tour of Lexington won’t be complete without a thorough exploration of downtown Lexington, listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The architecture has been preserved from the 19th century and retail shops entice visitors with Virginia-made crafts, fine art, clothing, and more. With an enticing bed and breakfast centrally located near downtown Lexington, you’ll be staying in the perfect spot from which to venture out and uncover historic Lexington and Rockbridge County.
