All visitors to Asheville must see the world famous Biltmore House and Gardens. Built by George Vanderbilt in 1895, this 250-room mansion brings the Gilded Age to life. The home boasts 250 rooms, 65 fireplaces, an indoor pool, bowling alley, and fine art and antiques. There are spectacular gardens and woodlands designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, a wonderful winery and tasting room, a restaurant, an inn, and an outdoor program that includes biking, horseback riding, float trips and carriage rides.
The Botanical Gardens at Asheville focus on plants native to the Southern Appalachian Mountain areas including a large variety of trees, shrubs, vines, wildflowers, herbs, grasses, ferns, mosses, lichens and more. The Gardens provide a wonderful setting for educational programs, weddings, memorials, picnics, and classes such as photography, painting, and plant identification. Tours are available. There is also a library, a lecture room, and a gift shop.
