Dubuque, Iowa bed and breakfast: The Hancock House

Upon arrival, Chuck or Susan Huntley will greet you warmly at the door and welcome you inside. The Inn-keepers themselves are what makes this home so charming and your first few minutes with them will make this evident.

A brief tour of the main guest facilities includes a stroll through the dining room where you'll be served a full breakfast each morning at 8:30 to 9:30 (before 8:30 a Continental Breakfast is provided). Through the dining room is the guest pantry; help yourself to coffee or cookies any time. Also available are complimentary wines and imported beer for your enjoyment.

The wrap around porch is a perfect place to spend quiet relaxing moments. The porch swing is ideal for a romantic conversation or just a place to sip your favorite beverage and listen to the summer crickets.

In the south parlor, you are welcome to relax and drink in the charm of period furnishings and handsome decor can spur hours of conversation. Be sure to ask about the fireplace, it won a blue ribbon at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Lounge in the north parlor and enjoy the beautiful view overlooking historic Dubuque and the Mississippi river. There is even a telescope here so you can make the most of this rare view.

The city of Dubuque is named after Julien Dubuque, a French Canadian fur trader who settled in the area in the 1780's. Dubuque originally came to the region to engage in trade with the Mesquakie Indians who occupied the land at that time. As Dubuque befriended the Mesquakie, his attention turned from fur trading to the abundant number of plentiful lead mines that were located on their property.
