Built in the 1880’s, Barncastle was the first of Blue Hill’s grand summer cottages. A boutique hotel and restaurant, still welcoming summer visitors to Blue Hill more than 120 years later.

Known also as the Kline Cottage and Ideal Lodge, the sprawling home was designed by Boston City Architect and native son George Clough for Virgil & Effie Kline, she the eccentric manager of the Boston Ideal Opera Company. Her love of the stage is reflected in this highly theatrical home.

Barncastle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and in recent years has been operated as an Inn, Arcady Downeast.

Barncastle is the perfect year-round venue for events from 10 to 150 guests. The North Lawn is contained by a lilac hedge and features a rose-covered arbor, fruit trees and perennial gardens. The lawn is ideal for tented ceremonies and receptions for up to 150 guests.

    Blue Hill is at the center of a long stretch of Maine’s unique coastline, a short drive from bustling Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park and just minutes from the boat building community of Brooklin, home to Wooden Boat Magazine and Wooden Boat School.

    Nearby Deer Isle is host to Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the fishing village of Stonington, where the mail boat departs daily for Isle au Haut. Quaint Castine, one of the oldest settlements in North America, is also but an easy drive.

    In Blue Hill, visit the many galleries and shops downtown, or let us pack you a picnic lunch for a hike up the mountain. Sea kayak rentals and boat charters can be arranged at the time of your reservation.
